ISO 9001 Certification Cost & Fees: What You Need To Know

ISO 9001 is the most well-known popular standard. Several organizations are still aspiring to get this standard implemented in their organization and obtain ISO 9001 Certification. This article will deal with the direct and Indirect costs of Obtaining and maintaining ISO 9001 Certification.

For many organizations looking to improve their management, process, and product standards and governance, one of the most important steps is to become certified. ISO 9001:2015 certification cost is the total expenditure incurred by the organization to obtain, implement and maintain ISO 9001:2015 certification. It includes 3 Direct Cost Components and 2 Indirect Cost Components (Please see below). 

Direct Cost Component 1 = Audit Fee = Varies depending on the number of sub-certifications required in the audit (For Example: If the company wishes to get ISO 9001:2015 certification for its manufacturing unit, it may need to get it ISO 14001:2015 certification for its Environmental Management System). 

Direct Cost Component 2 = Implementation Fee = Varies depending on the scope of implementation. The scope of implementation is defined as all the changes required by the standard for the organization to meet its requirements. 

Direct Cost Component 3 = Maintenance Fee = Varies depending on the scope of maintenance. This is defined as all the changes required by relevant regulatory bodies after obtaining ISO 9001:2015 Certification (For Example a company may need to change some of its processes and documents once it needs to get ISO 9001 certification for its manufacturing unit)

Indirect Cost Component 1 = Preparatory Assessment Fee (PAP) = Varies depending on the nature and scope of preparation. The organization needs to prepare and complete what is called a PAP which will be provided by the auditor once it has been appointed. This PAP is used to identify all gaps existing in the company’s quality system for their business. This is based on an analysis of the current management systems in use by the organization. 

Indirect Cost Component 2 = Recruitment of staff = as per the standard requirements organization may have to go for recrtuiting staffs for this purpose.

Indirect Cost Component 3 = Upgrading, modifying and providing resources to meet the quality requirement purposes. Example: Company may procure more measuring instruments, construct inspection table, expanded areas for stocking the raw materials. 

Indirect Cost Component 4 = Modifying the advertisement materials, contents, display to promote the ISO 9001 in the advertisement materials.

Indirect Cost Component 5 = Back-up of data captred at the various department, processes and analysis of those data. This requires better storage devices and more advanced computational softwares. 

The above 2 components, Direct + Indirect Costs = Total Expenditure on obtaining and maintaining the ISO 9001 Certification.

These costs may vary depending on the country in which the company is based.
